St. Francis Required Summer Reading - Rising 6th Grade

Back to All Grades List

Dear incoming 6th Grader:

Read a TON over the summer! Read things you love! Read, read, and read some more! So that we can begin the year with some shared conversations about our reading, the two required books to complete before the first day of school include:

Pax by Sara Pennypacker (dystopian fiction)

“Pax and Peter have been inseparable ever since Peter rescued him as a kit. But one day, the unimaginable happens: Peter's dad enlists in the military and makes him return the fox to the wild. At his grandfather's house, three hundred miles away from home, Peter knows he isn't where he should be—with Pax. He strikes out on his own despite the encroaching war, spurred by love, loyalty, and grief, to be reunited with his fox. Meanwhile Pax, steadfastly waiting for his boy, embarks on adventures and discoveries of his own.”

Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor

Set in Mississippi at the height of the Depression, this is the story of one family's struggle to maintain their integrity, pride, and independence in the face of racism and social injustice. And it is also Cassie's story—Cassie Logan, an independent girl who discovers over the course of an important year why having land of their own is so crucial to the Logan family, even as she learns to draw strength from her own sense of dignity and self-respect.

Before, during, and after reading, think about the following Essential Questions for 6th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies and how these questions apply to the novels. You don't have to write anything, but just read these questions and think about how they apply to the book.

  1. What is home?

  2. Why are people in groups?

  3. What brings about change?

  4. Whom do we believe in, and why?

  5. What is power, and who has it?

  6. What is wealth, and who has it?

  7. Why do people move from place to place?

  8. Why do people go to war?

  9. What impact does the environment have on people?

  10. What is the role of the citizen locally, nationally, and globally?

We will begin the school year thinking, talking, and writing about these essential questions and these books, as well as the other books you read over the summer on your own, so have them fresh in your mind on the first day of school! Have a great summer!
