Availability: On Our Shelves in the last 24 hours. Click to see a specific store location's stock.
Published: Riverhead Books - June 28th, 2022

THRUST is the literary equivalent of distilling America down into a psychedelic drug then taking a few too many hits...in a good way! It's like a sociopolitical/naturalist Alice In Wonderland for adults: talking animals, swimming the time/reality streams, offbeat sex work, constructing the Statue of Liberty, the Oklahoma City bombing, bodily disasters, and a watery, wasted future world. Yuknavitch's philosophical surrealism of the mind and body pulls from Burroughs and Pynchon, Katherine Dunn's Geek Love, and Margaret Atwood's MadAdam trilogy; heavy yet with a strange sense of humor.

My favorite "pandemic lit"! Alex Graham works in the great underground comix tradition of letting it all hang out, warts and all. This is people being people (even if they look more like mutant bunny-dogs), getting through crisis, social weirdness, political crap, and simple everyday life. Hilarious, "dirty", smart... for fans of TV's Fleabag and R. Crumb.

Published: Viking - March 8th, 2022

It's tempting to describe Glory as an African riff on Animal Farm, but that only scratches the surface. Bulawayo utilizes animal characters for lampooning and ironic effects similarly to Orwell, but her novel is as much a coming-of-age story as a political satire, and it has both more boiling anger and honeyed humor than its 20th C. predecessor. Glory nearly dances across its pages with kinetic language and breathing, sweating characters that will make you feel the intimate human costs of power.

Milligan's barely on the rails narrative loop-de-loops and Fegredo's itchy-scratchy-electric artwork are a perfect marriage for this dark head-trip of a story. Another gorgeous, delicate gem of character study and social futurism from master craftsman Ishiguro. In style and theme, this one fits in perfectly alongside Remains of the Day, The Buried Giant and Never Let Me Go. Its finely shaded details and subtle emotional build-up sneak up on the reader and pack a wallop. How lovely to read a story about artificial intelligence and the future that is tender and warm-hearted (if melancholy), rather than pessimistic and dystopian. Bits of influence swirl around here from Spielberg's A.I., Kosinski's Being There, Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and Collodi's Pinnochio, but with a big heart all its own.

Laymon pulls off several literary magic tricks with Long Division: making time-bending metafiction that's down to earth, satire that's touching and poignant, and perhaps most magically of all finding gems of humor and joy hidden within pain and injustice. One might imagine James Baldwin watching Back To The Future and deciding to write this book to show them how it's done for real.

I think Black Leopard Red Wolf is going to leave its big, bloody paw prints all over the fantasy genre: probably in terms of influence, and hopefully in terms of sales figures as well. This African myth based epic of mayhem and magic will be refreshingly different yet fulfilling for adventurous readers looking for something new in the territory of Game of Thrones or N.K. Jemisin's books, but I'd say James' work is actually closer in style and effect to slightly more challenging, left-of-center worldbuilders like Gene Wolfe (Book of The New Sun), Clive Barker (Imajica), or China Mieville (The Scar). It's a supremely visceral volume, but sprinkled with wonders, humor and deep questions about truth, morality, and power. Superb!

Little Bird is a treat for fans of dark fantasy and weird dystopian worlds. There are shades of a His Dark Materials style totalitarian theocracy in Darcy Van Poelgeest's story, mixed with brutal, Mad Maxian violence and an almost Dune-like combo of science fiction and mysticism. ISBN: 9780375424328
Availability: Not currently on our shelves, but available to order (usually within a few days)
Published: Pantheon - September 24th, 2019

At 350 pages, one could be forgiven for wishing that Chris Ware's dense, macro/micro-scopic graphic novel take on 20th C. American life was... um, complete, but it ends with an "intermission". So there is more yet to come, however, more of Ware's work should always be welcomed, and Rusty Brown is only really incomplete in the way that Proust's Swann's Way is part of the larger In Search of Lost Time. And that comparison is not too elevated: Ware makes the richest, deepest, most humane, and visually beautiful work in comics. Rusty Brown makes the mundane milieu of suburban, mid-western, mid-size city, USA the site of universal struggles, wrenching pathos, and sweet-sad tragi-comedy, while Ware's absolute mastery of the comics form allows him to craft a structure so intricate and gorgeous that it eventually lifts the reader away from the edge of misery into a transcendent sense of human connection and perseverance.  Solid gold literature.

Published: Picador - September 10th, 2019

This complex fabulist tapestry in the tradition of The Master and Margarita, The Satanic Verses, and genre "neapolitans" like Cloud Atlas and Gnomon, is incredibly entertaining and intellectually stimulating. Love, murder, mysticism, genetics, golems, Nazis, Vikings, and more are entwined together beautifully in this Icelandic literary masterpiece. Sometimes it feels like the whole history of storytelling is compressed into this one volume, with Sjon jumping from genre deconstruction and mythic visions to earthy humor and grounded human emotion with astounding grace.

Wow! This is a very bold, fresh, hilarious, and smart combination of literary satire and apocalyptic Scifi. It manages to combine elements of a futuristic Austenesque marriage plot with a Vonnegut/Saunders style blackly humorous take on "reality TV" celebrity culture, set in a strange decaying metropolis a la Philip K. Dick rewriting Escape From New York. And Dragons!? Should be great for fans of Jonathan Lethem's Chronic City, Kirsten Bakis' Lives of the Monster Dogs, or Nick Harkaway's Gone-away World.

The Vorrh trilogy is a literary fantasy like no other: Brian Catling combines myriad far-ranging influences (surrealist painters, Heart Of Darkness, Holdstock's Mythago Wood, early Terry Gilliam films, the Bible) and characters both reality-based (photography pioneer Edward Muybridge, poet-artist-mystic Willliam Blake, naturalist Eugene Marais) and completely fantastical (A cyclops! Possibly fallen angels! Insectoid robots!) into a dense, poetic, slow-burning-yet-explosive epic that rewrites 20th century history, interrogates capitolism, war, and Euro-African colonialism, and reinvents mythology, art, and the natural world. It's a stunning, genre-defying work that lies somewhere between the realms of John Crowley's Aegypt cycle, Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, Clive Barker's Imajica, and Vandermeer's Area X trilogy (Annihilation).

Perhaps the masterpiece of a writer who's had many near-masterpieces. Powers is known for bringing a human angle to scientific and artistic subjects. With The Overstory he's written an ode to the natural world, an envirionmentalist plea, and a beautiful, symphonically structured, multi-branched story that depicts people's deep-rooted connection to trees across the expanse of time and place from antebellum New York to the Vietnam War to a Northwest eco-topia of the future. As lofty as that sounds, this is also a very human novel with rich characters, vivid settings, loads of information and thrilling flights of imagination that will deeply satisfy fans of Don Delillo's Underworld, Annie Proulx's Barkskins, Edward Jones' Known World, or Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.
