About the Authors:

RENEE FLEMING is one of the most acclaimed singers of our time, performing on the stages of the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls. Honored with five Grammy awards and the U.S. National Medal of Arts, she has sung for momentous occasions from the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to the Super Bowl. A Goodwill Ambassador for Arts and Health for the World Health Organization, in December she was awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor. Fleming launched the first ongoing collaboration between The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Fleming’s new anthology, Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness, draws upon her own experience as an advocate to showcase the breadth of this booming field. She has invited leading experts to share their discoveries, with essays from notable musicians, writers, and artists, as well as leading neuroscientists and practitioners. In addition to describing therapeutic benefits, the book explores evolution, brain function, childhood development, and technology as applied to arts and health.

Renée’s current concert calendar includes appearances in London, Milan, Paris, and at Carnegie Hall. In November, she starred in the world premiere staging of The Hours, a new opera based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and award-winning film, at the Metropolitan Opera. She won the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Solo Album for Voice of Nature: the Anthropocene. Other awards include the 2023 Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum, the Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal, and honorary doctorates from eight leading universities.

RICHARD POWERS is the author of thirteen novels that explore connections among disciplines as disparate as photography, artificial intelligence, musical composition and performance, ecology, genomics, game theory, virtual reality, race, biology, and business.  His books have won numerous recognitions including The Rosenthal and Vursell Awards; the James Fenimore Cooper Prize; the Corrington Award; a PEN/Hemingway Special Citation; the John Dos Passos Prize for Literature, two Pushcart Prizes, and TIME Magazine's Book of the Year. He is a MacArthur Fellow, a fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a recipient of the Lannan Literary Award.  His novel The Echo Maker won the 2006 National Book Award.  Powers’ The Overstory was awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
