*CANCELED* Gene Luen Yang

Event date:

Tuesday, March 17, 2020 - 6:30pm
301 York Street
Louisville, KY 40203

*This program has been canceled. We apologize for the inconvenience.*

We at Carmichael's Bookstore are excited to announce that Gene Luen Yang will be visiting us at the Louisville Free Public Library on tour for his new book, DRAGON HOOPS!

In his latest graphic novel, Dragon Hoops, New York Times bestselling author Gene Luen Yang turns the spotlight on his life, his family, and the high school where he teaches.

Gene understands stories—comic book stories, in particular. Big action. Bigger thrills. And the hero always wins.

But Gene doesn’t get sports. As a kid, his friends called him “Stick” and every basketball game he played ended in pain. He lost interest in basketball long ago, but at the high school where he now teaches, it's all anyone can talk about. The men’s varsity team, the Dragons, is having a phenomenal season that’s been decades in the making. Each victory brings them closer to their ultimate goal: the California State Championships.

Once Gene gets to know these young all-stars, he realizes that their story is just as thrilling as anything he’s seen on a comic book page. He knows he has to follow this epic to its end. What he doesn’t know yet is that this season is not only going to change the Dragons’s lives, but his own life as well.

We will be on-site to sell Dragon Hoops. This event is FREE but please register! http://www.lfpl.org/tickets/authorticket.php

His book “The Meatshower” was published by Early Works Press in 2019. Probably the strangest event to ever happen in our state, the Kentucky Meat Shower dropped chunks of mysterious meat on a farm in Bath County, Kentucky in 1876. No explanation has proven satisfactory. Mick and Shae don’t have the answers, but they had fun telling the story.

About the book: Two funny, unlikely friends—a thoughtful sloth and an impatient fox—make their big debut in this hilarious new picture book celebrating friendship and the wonderful ways in which we’re all different.

Best friends Jasper and Ollie decide to go to the pool. On your mark, get set…WAIT! As Jasper races ahead—crashing into the mailman, speeding past the ice cream truck—Ollie takes his sweet time, pausing to admire a butterfly, smell a daisy, and help the mailman pick up his letters!

Alex Willan grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was seldom seen without his sketchbook in hand. His love of drawing led him to earn a BFA in illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design. Alex has exhibited in art galleries and has painted murals, theater sets, and squirmy kids’ faces, but his true love has always been children’s books. He lives in Chicago with his dog, Harley.
