THIS BOOK IS ABOUT one of the most profound mystics and philosophers of the Middle Ages, the German Dominican monk Eckhart von Hochheim, better known as Meister Eckhart, who near the end of his life was accused of heresy and convicted by the Inquisition.
He was probably the first Christian philosopher to recognize the importance of living in the Now, like more recent mystics like Krishnamurti, Eckhart Tolle, and Ram Dass have:
"There exists only the present instant... a Now which always and without end is itself new. There is no yesterday nor any tomorrow, but only Now, as it was a thousand years ago and as it will be a thousand years hence..."
According to him:
"Time is what keeps the light from reaching us. There is no greater obstacle to God than time: and not only time but temporalities, not only temporal things but temporal affections, not only temporal affections but the very taint and smell of time."
