A conspiracy theory is an explanation for an event or situation that invokes a conspiracy by sinister and powerful groups, often political in motivation when other explanations are more probable. The term has a negative connotation, implying that the appeal to a conspiracy is based on prejudice or insufficient evidence.

Being a skeptic, basic investigative practices and some general guidelines for determining legitimacy are covered in the six chapters of this book. The goal of this work is to encourage people to "just stop" for a few minutes and do some basic research before they share and perpetuate unfounded rumors and falsehoods across the internet.
