The term "Christmas music" refers to a wide range of musical styles that are frequently played or heard around the time of year associated with Christmas. The music that is associated with Christmas can be entirely instrumental, or in the case of carols or songs, it can employ lyrics whose subject matter extends from the nativity of Jesus Christ to gift-giving and merrymaking, to cultural icons such as Santa Claus, amongst other topics. There are a lot of songs that have been included in the canon for no other reason than the fact that they have a winter or seasonal theme.
